I had a delightful visit to the Wildlife Safari on September 5th and 6th. A drive through on Friday with my 1D Mark III I took some shots for a class I was teaching the following morning. We had a great presentation and the group was a lot of fun. This was one of my first trainings with a mixed group of camera owners. We had Canon, Nikon and Pentax owners as well as a lot of people using point and shoots.

Flash Metering: Evaluative vs Average

When working with the Canon flash system, either the pop up or the External flash, you have two options or metering: Evaluative and Average.

Most people never figure out how the two differ, for in fact the look the same in many situations.  Here I show where the differences would most likely be noticed.

Wednesday morning started early as I prepared to present the Canon three hour EOS Discovery Day for Pro Photo Supply in Portland.  The class had approximately 50 people.  You couldn’t ask for a better place to do a presentation.  The gardens are always beautiful.

Dance-0117 Orton Originally uploaded by occecid I further enhanced the dreamy effect through a technique known as Orton photography. Two of the same photo that are over exposed one full stopped are combined. One is sharp while the other is out of focus. The effect is a soft photo with a sharp core.
